As part of its state visit, the Italian President Sergio Mattarella visited ETH Zürich together with the President of the Swiss Confederation Ignazio Cassis. On this occasion, Dr. Viola Becattini presented the ongoing activities of the Separation Processes Laboratory in the field of CO2 management solutions.

After a warm welcome by ETH President Joël Mesot, five top Italian researchers working at ETH presented their research in innovation, environment and entrepreneurship as well as health-related projects.

Viola's presentation showcased the pilot project led by ETH Zürich (DemoUpCARMA), which aims to demonstrate the implementation and large-scale potential of two solutions to manage CO2 captured at point sources (e.g., cement, waste-to-energy, and biogas upgrading plants): CO2 utilization and permanent storage in primary and recycled concrete in Switzerland, and CO2 transport and permanent storage in a geological reservoir abroad, in Iceland. These solutions are an integral component to reduce Switzerland’s greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 to net zero, and to reach the country’s climate goals.
