Every year in January, the Salar de Uyuni (Bolivia) becomes a huge natural reactor (10.500 square kilometers x 15 cm) due to the annual rainfalls. During the rest of the year, the sun and the wind are the only actors in creating these beautiful shapes of sodium, lithium and magnesium chloride.

At the 30th International Symposium on Preparative and Process Chromatography in Philadelphia, USA, in July Franziska Ortner, Chantal Ruppli and Marco Mazzotti won first place with their poster "Description of thermodynamic equilibria between adsorbed and convective phases under non-ideal conditions".

At the annual conference of the British Association of Crystal Growth (BACG) in Manchester, UK, in June two posters from SPL researchers garnered prizes: The award for the best poster with a major experimental component went to "Solid state deracemisation of Imine derivatives via high pressure homogenisation and temperature cycles" by Francesca Breveglieri, Giovanni Maria Maggioni, Maria Pilar Fernandez-Ronco and Marco Mazzotti. Luca Bosetti received the second prize in the “Crystals as Art” competition for his poster “Natural Beauty”.
